Playwright error

browserType.launch: Executable doesn't exist at <path>

The path is where Playwright looked for the browser, for example C:\Users\...\ms-playwright\chromium-1179\chrome-win\chrome.exe. Playwright MCP wraps the same message in "Failed to initialize browser".

Playwright looked for its browser.
The download is missing or out of date.

What it means

Each Playwright version looks for the browser build it shipped with, here chromium-1179. A fresh install, an update, a different user account or a cleared cache leaves that build missing.

Playwright MCP and Playwright are versioned independently, so the build the MCP wants can differ from the one you installed by hand (issue 1091).

Fix it

  1. Run npx playwright install. It is the command Playwright prints in the box under the error. npx playwright install chromium fetches one browser.
  2. Run it as the user, and in the environment, that launches the browser. The download goes to that user's own Playwright cache.
  3. After you update Playwright or Playwright MCP, run the install again. A new version wants a new browser build.
  4. Playwright MCP also has a browser_install tool, so the agent can run the install for you.

With superbot

This is a local setup error, and superbot does not fix it. superbot is an alternative if the goal is a page opened in a browser.

superbot opens a page in a browser session through its one tool, and you can click, type and fill forms in it. The session runs in the browser on your own computer when your account has one linked, else in a cloud browser.

It does not use a Playwright browser download, so this error does not apply to it.

ask

Open https://httpbin.org/html in a browser session, read me the first sentence of the page, then close the session.

reply
Read from the page on the cloud browser; the session is closed.

The first sentence: "Availing himself of the mild, summer-cool weather that now reigned in these latitudes, …"
A real answer on 2026-10-18, trimmed. The reply says the session ran in a cloud browser.

This needs an account.
An agent with none signs you in through /auth.md.
You read back one emailed code.
