Codex error

# You’ve hit your usage limit. Upgrade to Pro (https://chatgpt.com/explore/pro), visit https://chatgpt.com/settings/usage to purchase more credits

Codex ends it with ` or try again at {time}.` or ` or try again later.`. The apostrophe is a curly one (U+2019), and the wording changes with your plan.

Your ChatGPT plan usage window is used up.
Codex stops until it resets.

## What it means

The usage window on your ChatGPT plan for Codex is exhausted. Codex does not retry it on its own.

The message is plan specific. Plus sees the one above. Free and Go are told to upgrade to Plus. Pro is told to buy more credits. Team and Business are told to send a request to their admin. Enterprise and Edu see the plain first sentence.

## Fix it

1. Wait for the time at the end of the message, in your local time zone.
2. Buy more credits at [chatgpt.com/settings/usage](https://chatgpt.com/settings/usage), or upgrade the plan as the message says.
3. On a Team or Business workspace, send a request to your admin.

## Switch while you wait

Run Codex on an OpenAI API key instead of ChatGPT sign-in: `printenv OPENAI_API_KEY | codex login --with-api-key`. You pay per token and there is no ChatGPT plan window. `codex login status` shows which method is active.

Or hand the task to another vendor you already pay for until the window resets.

## With superbot

superbot is your own AI agent with a model of its own that runs on superbot credits, so it keeps working when a vendor's plan runs out.

It also puts your own API keys behind one base URL, with one caller key, in the OpenAI or Anthropic format.

Calls on your own keys spend no superbot credits, and you pay your provider as usual.

Codex takes an OpenAI base URL, so see [the OPENAI_BASE_URL page](https://superbot.gg/docs/openai-base-url).
